Kyanite

Kyanite is a gemstone quality aluminum silicate that sometimes shows a sapphire-like blue, and recent finds of very high quality Kyanite in Nepal are changing how this change is being viewed world over.

Kyanite most often occurs in various shades of medium blue. It is less commonly colorless, white, gray, green, yellow or orange. The colorless form is the rarest, though not the most valuable form of kyanite. The most desirable color is sapphire-like blue.

Kyanite deposits are found in Brazil, the USA (North Carolina and Georgia), Switzerland, Russia, Serbia, India, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Cambodia, Burma and Nepal.

While the Kyanite from Cambodia and Burma rarely delivers on the promise of a sapphire-like blue, the Nepalese material sometimes comes surprisingly close to the velvety blue of the best Kashmir and Ceylon sapphire.
